DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is engaged in performing restoration and mainten­ance work on museum displays.  The employee works under general supervision but handles assignments independently to attain an improved level of condition in old or damaged display items.  The work is reviewed by inspection of results.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Repairs and cleans antique dolls and doll clothing;

          Repairs porcelain and pottery objects to restore original appearance;

          Tests samples of display materials to determine the best method of cleaning and repairing;

          Restores faded and damaged paintings and frames;

          Catalogs and marks new acquisitions;

          Conducts group tours through the museum;

          Answers questions regarding articles on display.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the display, preservation and repair of museum artifacts; good knowledge of current sources of information and literature pertaining to antiques, artifacts, local history and research; skill in preparing and using paints, dyes, glue and other required materials; skill in arranging museum displays; ability to work with the public in a helpful and friendly manner.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          Three (3) years of experience in restoring artifacts, paintings, and architectural details for displays in a municipal museum.
