DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general direction, an employee in this class administers all educa­tional programs run by the Hecksher Museum of Art, including budgets, scheduling personnel assignments and reports.  The incumbent supervises a professional and volunteer staff.  Work is reviewed by the Museum Director through conferences and oral and written reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Administers all museum educational programs including budgets, scheduling personnel assignments and reports;

          Designs and evaluates educational programs for special needs (i.e. handi­capped audiences);

          Acts as liaison to schools and community agencies, groups, and individuals to promote educational and cultural programs such as lectures, concerts, film series, etc.;

          Consults with the museum curator on exhibitions with regard to interpretive materials and programming;

          Supervises the activities of a professional and clerical staff.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the educational operations, functions and programs of an art museum; good knowledge of the principles and practices of educational theory, especially as it pertains to planning curricula and presenting educa­tional programs; ability to promote interest in art and in the programs offered by the museum; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school personnel, professional colleagues and organizations and the general public; ability to supervise others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; ability to keep a variety of records and to prepare and submit reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          Either:

          a) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Master's Degree in Art History, Art Education or Museum Studies and one (1) year of experience conducting comparable programs in the education department of an art museum; or,

         

          b) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Art History, Art Education or Museum Studies and two (2) years of experience conducting comparable programs in the education department of an art museum; or,

         

          c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
