DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the recording, cataloging and filing of museum specimens, utilizing advanced techniques of museum registration and classification. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Catalogs new
acquisitions, cross files documents of all permanent museum objects;
Records incoming and
outgoing loan and exchange exhibits;
Examines all incoming and
outgoing loans to determine condition and damages if any;
Presides over the
physical handling of specimens for storing, packing, shipping and insuring;
Maintains file on
material and exhibits available to the museum;
Maintains records of the
location of museum artifacts on extended loans at special exhibitions and in
storage;
Maintains liaison with
other museums in order to arrange for exchanges of stimulating exhibits.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good
knowledge of museum practices and cataloging systems; good knowledge of
preservation, packing and handling techniques of rare and fragile specimens;
ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow
employees and the general public; ability to keep and maintain detailed
records; ability to promote interest in museum activities; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation
from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with an
Associate's Degree in Art or a related field, and two (2) years of experience
in subprofessional museum work; or,
b) Graduation from a standard senior high
school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years
experience in subprofessional museum work; or,
c) An equivalent combination of education and
experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
