DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class
assists the Museum Director in a wide variety of administrative and
professional duties in the operation of a municipal museum; and acts for the
Director in his absence. Work includes
responsibility for researching and exhibiting a variety of art objects. Administrative duties include assisting in
scheduling exhibits, preparing press releases, addressing groups and preparing
the budget. All work is reviewed by the
Director through inspections and discussions.
Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Assists in planning and conducting various exhibitions
and lectures in the museum; assists in displaying paintings and other art
objects;
Assists in supervising the hanging
and storing of a permanent collection;
Assists in making arrangements with
other museums or collectors for showing their art objects;
Prepares publicity releases;
Prepares descriptive placards;
Assists in cataloging all material
and supervising the continuation of the system installed;
Conducts correspondence related to
research activities with art museums, art experts, and officials of other
historic and scientific restorations;
Conducts research in the
authenticity and evaluation of the various paintings and exhibits;
Escorts special guests, schoolchildren
and other groups through the museum;
Lectures and delivers gallery talks
at the museum and to outside groups;
Serves on juries for local art
shows;
Assists in supervising the
maintenance and care of the museum, paintings and exhibitions;
Assists in preparing budget for the
museum;
Requisitions supplies;
Assigns work to support staff.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the display, repair, restoration and
evaluation of a wide variety of museum exhibition; good knowledge of current
sources of information and literature pertaining to art, its history, art
research and evaluation; some knowledge of established principles, practices
and methods used in museum administration; some knowledge of the principles of
public relations and public speaking, and ability to apply them to promotional
and lecturing tasks; ability to establish and maintain effective work
relationships with community leaders, professional colleagues, and
organizations, public officials, and the general public; ability to analyze
facts and to exercise sound judgment in arriving at conclusions; ability to
plan, assign and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely,
both orally and in writing; ability to keep a variety of records and to prepare
and submit reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
a)
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized
accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in Art or
related field, and two (2) years of experience as a curator in an art museum;
or,
b)
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high
school equivalency diploma and six (6) years experience as a curator in an art museum;
or,
c)
An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the
limits of a) and b).
