DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direction, an employee in this class performs administrative and professional duties in the operation of a museum.  Work includes the responsi­bility for researching, purchasing, and exhibiting a variety of museum pieces.  Administrative duties include scheduling and conducting guided tours, preparing publicity releases and addressing various groups about the museum, planning and preparing the annual budget, and supervising minor maintenance work.  Work is performed with a considerable degree of professional and administrative indepen­dence and is subject to review of the museum Board of Trustees on policy mat­ters, and budget requests.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Plans and conducts various exhibitions and lectures in the museum;

          Purchases museum objects and displays them with the approval of the Board of Trustees;

          Supervises the hanging and storing of a permanent collection;

          Arranges with other museums or collectors for showing museum objects;

          Prepares publicity releases;

          Prepares descriptive placards;

          Catalogues all material and supervises the continuation of the system installed;

          Conducts correspondence related to research activities with museums, art experts, and officials of other historic and scientific restorations;

          Conducts research in the authenticity and evaluation of the various exhibits;

          Escorts special guests, school children and other groups through the museum;

          Lectures and delivers gallery talks at the museum and to outside groups;

          Serves on juries for local art shows;

          Confers with Board of Trustees and others on expansion of services of the museum to the public;

          Supervises the maintenance and care of the museum, paintings and exhibitions;

          Prepares budget for the museum;

          Requisitions supplies;

          Assigns work orders to support staff.                                                     

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the display, repair, restoration and evaluation of a wide variety of museum exhibitions; thorough knowledge of current sources of information and literature pertaining to research and evaluation of museum objects and exhibits; good knowledge of the established principles, practices and methods used in administrating a museum; some knowledge of the principles of public

relations and public speaking, and ability to apply them to promotional and lecturing tasks; ability to establish and maintain effective working relation­ships with community leaders, professional colleagues, and organizations, public officials, and the general public; ability to analyze facts and to exercise sound judgment in arriving at conclusions; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to keep a variety of records and to prepare and submit reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          a)  Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with an appropriate Master's Degree*, and two (2) years of experience as a curator in a museum; or,

         

          b)  Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and eight (8) years of experience as a curator in a museum; or,

         

          c)  An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).

 

*NOTE

Type of degree to be determined by the appointing authority based upon the area of specialty of the museum.
