DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves the planning and
supervision of the operation and maintenance activities of a town rifle and
pistol range. An employee in this class
plans, assigns and supervises the work of a small number of Range Officer I's
at a town-owned rifle and pistol range.
Work involves responsibility for directing or conducting a firearm
course, programs and tournaments sponsored by various rifle associations and
gun clubs as well as enforcing town laws and safety regulations governing range
operations. General supervision is
received from a technical administrative official, who reviews work through
conferences, written reports and periodic inspection of range activities. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Plans,
assigns and supervises the work of Range Officer I's engaged in maintaining
safe shooting conditions on the town rifle and pistol range;
Checks
the identification of town residents using the rifle and pistol range and sees
that persons using hand guns are properly licensed;
Schedules
classes on the handling and care of firearms for the general public; instructs
and assigns qualified Range Officer I's to conduct these classes;
Makes
arrangements for and oversees tournaments sponsored by the National Rifle
Association, State Conservation Department and local gun clubs;
Enforces
State and local laws, safety rules and regulations governing range operations;
Maintains
simple work records and prepares routine reports on all range activities;
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles,
practices and methods used in rifle and pistol range work; good knowledge of
State and local laws, ordinances, rules and safety regulations governing the
licensing and use of firearms; skill in handling and caring for various types
of firearms, ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinate personnel in
a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to establish
and maintain effective working relationships with gun club members, rifle
association representatives, town officials and the general public; ability to
instruct groups and individuals in the use and care of firearms; ability to
enforce state and local firearms laws and range regulations with firmness, tact
and impartiality, and to deal courteously with the general public; ability to
keep records and prepare reports or work performed; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the positions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Two
(2) years experience as:
(A)
N. R. A. certified instructor in rifle
and pistol; or,
(B)
Federal firearms instructor; or,
(C)
Police firearms instructor; or,
(D)
Military firearms instructor; or,
(E)
New York State hunter safety instructor; or,
Satisfactory combination of the above
experience which totals two (2) years.
PROMOTIONAL
One
(1) year permanent competitive status as a Range Officer I.
