DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class assists in the overall
operations of a municipal tennis program and the facilities related to that
program, and acts as a municipality’s expert in playing/teaching the game of
tennis. The work involves planning,
coordinating, and conducting tennis tournaments and lessons for individuals or
groups of varying ages and skill levels.
The incumbent assesses and addresses participants’ individual needs and
skill level, including advising on the appropriate type of program/lesson for
the participant, and performing maintenance/repairs of tennis equipment, when
necessary. Responsibility is included
for monitoring court/facility conditions, the tennis pro shop’s operations, if
applicable, and for the supervision and training of tennis program staff. Work is performed under the general direction
of an administrative supervisor, with significant leeway for the incumbent to
utilize independent discretion in matters related to the incumbent’s expertise
in the game of tennis. Does related work
as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Plans,
advertises, and conducts various types of tennis tournaments;
Conducts
tennis lessons for participants of various ages with various skill levels;
Assesses
participants’ skill level in playing tennis, and determines placement in the
appropriate program/lesson;
Advises
participants on tennis equipment; performs maintenance/repairs of tennis
equipment, such as restringing a tennis racket using the appropriate type of
string;
Assists in the selection and
hiring of tennis staff; provides training to tennis staff;
Supervises and schedules the
activities of the staff that maintains the tennis pro shop;
Enforces
tennis rules and regulations personally and through staff; settles rule
disputes;
Enforces
club/program policies for members and guests;
Oversees
room rentals and the schedule of programs and events;
Assesses
the condition of tennis courts/facilities; determines what, if any, maintenance
is necessary;
Prepares
reports, collects and updates fees, and makes deposits related to tennis
program operations;
Makes
recommendations for the improvement of tennis programs and services.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of all aspects of the game of tennis; thorough knowledge of the structure and
scoring practices of various tennis events, tournaments, and competitions; good knowledge of the organization and
maintenance of a tennis pro shop, including use of computerized tennis facility
management systems; good knowledge of products and accessories utilized in the
game of tennis, including current trends in the tennis industry; good knowledge
of the principles and practices of tennis equipment repair; ability to develop
and teach tennis programs applicable to a wide variety of persons, of various
ages and skill levels; ability to accurately assess the skill level of tennis
players and place players in a skill level-appropriate program; ability to accurately assess the condition of
tennis courts/facilities and determine what, if any, maintenance is necessary
to ensure a safe and sanitary playing experience; ability to provide advice regarding the
appropriate tennis equipment for a particular player, and perform tennis
equipment maintenance/repairs such as restringing a tennis racket using the
appropriate type of string; ability to gain and hold the confidence of, and to
maintain a patient and understanding attitude toward, children; ability to supervise children in a safe and
tactful manner; ability to maintain order and to enforce rules/regulations with
firmness, tact and impartiality; ability to supervise in a manner conducive to
high morale; ability to establish a working relationship with public officials
and the general public; ability to address the needs of club members while
adhering to municipal guidelines; ability to express oneself clearly and
concisely; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of certifications,
issued by an organization accredited by the United States Tennis Association
(USTA), to teach the sport of Tennis to persons in age groups ten (10) years
old and under, seventeen (17) years old and under, and adults.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidates will be required to maintain
certifications, issued by an organization accredited by the United States
Tennis Association (USTA), to teach the sport of Tennis to persons in age
groups ten (10) years old and under, seventeen (17) years old and under, and
adults, throughout employment in this title.
Candidates will be required to complete a basic Red
Cross first-aid/CPR/AED training course, or its equivalent, and to renew this
course on an annual basis.
Candidates will be subject to a background
investigation.
