DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class directs the activities in the planning and operation of municipal golf courses.  The incumbent performs administrative and professional duties in the construction, maintenance and management of golf courses.  Work includes responsibility for the landscaping and upkeep of the tees, greens, fairways and general turf, as well as supervision over activities and general operation of the clubhouse.  Supervision is exercised over a staff of golf course employees.  Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative supervisor and is reviewed through reports submitted.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Directs personnel in landscaping, development and maintenance of greens, fairways, tees, water hazards, etc;

          Supervises the installation of a drainage system, sprinkler system and roadways;

          Determines when the spraying of insecticides and fungicides are necessary;

          Works with consultants in the design, equipping and scheduling of the clubhouse;

          Prepares and issues periodic reports on activities and services; assists in the preparation of financial reports;

          Supervises the recruitment and training of personnel needed in the opera­tion of a golf course;

          Prepares requisitions and various records;

          May assist as technical advisor to the municipality on proposed construc­tion of new golf courses.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of golf course construction, maintenance and management; thorough knowledge of the layout of the tees, fairways and greens; good knowledge of drainage and sprinkler systems; good knowledge of landscaping and maintenance of turf; ability to prepare periodic reports on activities, services and finan­cial rates; ability to recruit and train personnel needed in the operation of a golf course; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and general public in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          (a)  Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree, and four (4) years of experience in the construction, maintenance or management of a golf course, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or,

         

          (b)  Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and six (6) years of experience in the construction, maintenance or management of a golf course, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or,

         

          (c)  An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
