FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this
class is responsible for supervising the activities and operations of a group
of County parks. Work differs from that of a Park Supervisor II in that it
involves responsibility for maintaining a group of parks and for supervising a
number of supervisory park personnel engaged in the maintenance and use of
public park facilities. The incumbent is expected to exercise some independent
initiative and judgment in the utilization of an assigned park group. General
supervision is received from a County Parks Superintendent, and the work is
evaluated through conferences and written reports. General supervision is
exercised over Park Supervisors I, Park Supervisors II and Golf Course
Managers. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Coordinates the scheduling and
reservation of all activities for an assigned group of parks; adjusts and
balances park usage to alternate parks within the group as necessitated by
public demands;
Supervises Park Supervisors I, Park
Supervisors II and Golf Course Managers in the coordination of park lands and
personnel;
Confers with Park Supervisors
concerning plans for recreational areas and/or alterations to park facilities
and makes recommendations to the County Parks Superintendent on possible
alternative uses;
Oversees the use and condition of
parks and recommends necessary improvement to meet safety and sanitary levels
commensurate with County Parks Department policy;
Assists in making recommendations
for the proper protection of newly acquired parklands and reviews natural areas
that may lend themselves to park recreation and preservation;
May represent the County Parks
Department in speaking engagements for various community organizations and
events.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive
knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques for the optimum use and
development of park facilities and personnel with the park group; thorough
knowledge of effective supervisory techniques; thorough knowledge of the
capacity requirements of park facilities; ability to organize and coordinate
the details of scheduling and reserving a great influx of visitors; ability to
plan and supervise the work of employees in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain accurate and
complete records and reports; ability to resolve emergency situations with a
minimum of time and effort; ability to adapt future park expectations to daily
activities; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and
in writing; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of
the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a standard senior
high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and seven (7)
years of experience in the direction or supervision of park and ground
maintenance activities, including four (4) years experience in the supervision
of park activities, two (2) years of which must have included the supervision
of ground maintenance activities.
NOTE: Education at a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year
basis, up to a maximum of three (3) years. Education may not be substituted for
the required supervisory experience.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years of permanent
competitive status as a Park Supervisor II or Golf Course Manager.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidates
appointed to the Golf Courses for the Suffolk County Department of Parks,
Recreation and Conservation may be required to obtain a Category 3A Pesticide
Applicator License issued by the New York State Department of Environmental
Conservation.
