DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is responsible for overseeing the activities
and operations of all parks under the jurisdiction of the Suffolk County
Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. The employee is responsible
for reviewing recommendations for newly acquired land and making presentations
to the Commissioner for improved recreational programs. Responsibility is also
included for overseeing the implementation of new projects at all County parks.
The incumbent is expected to exercise independent initiative and judgment in
formulating proposals and coordinating all parks' activities. Supervision is
exercised over County Parks Superintendents.
Work is reviewed through conferences and reports. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Confers with County Parks
Superintendents concerning plans for development of recreational areas and/or
alterations of park areas;
Reviews recommendations
and makes presentations to the Commissioner;
Makes policy
recommendations regarding the protection and maintenance of existing and newly
acquired properties;
Oversees the development
of new programs and parks;
Oversees the
implementation of new work projects;
May assist in the
preparation of the annual budget;
May represent the
Department, speaking before various organizations and conferences.

CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of municipal
park and recreation management and operations; comprehensive knowledge of the
operational and maintenance requirements of the County Park facilities and
equipment; comprehensive knowledge of effective supervisory techniques; good
knowledge of how to layout and assign work details for new projects and to
direct their implementation in a manner conducive to full performance and high
morale; good knowledge of budgetary principles; ability to establish and
maintain both accurate and complete records; ability to plan and project, for
the future, needs of the Department; ability to express oneself clearly and
concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a
standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma,
and twelve (12) years experience in the supervision or administration of a
variety of park and ground maintenance activities including eight (8) years in
the supervision of park activities, two (2) years of which must have included
the supervision of ground maintenance activities.
NOTE: Education at a New York State
or regionally accredited college or university may be substituted on a year for
year basis up to a maximum of four (4) years. Education may not be substituted
for the required eight (8) years of supervisory experience.
