DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs work at the craftsman level in the restoration and preservation of historic buildings. The employee works under general supervision, but handles assignments independently to attain an improved level of condition in old or damaged buildings.  The work is reviewed by inspection of results.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists the Director of Historic Services in evaluating whether a building is capable of being restored and what methods of restoration will be used;

          Determines the methods of work and materials to be used based upon historic photographs and blueprints of buildings from the same time period;

          Modifies the existing methods of creating various furnishings;

          Orders and makes cost estimates on all lumber and special materials and supplies which must reflect the specific time period;

          Performs craftsman level work in the restoration and preservation of historic buildings;

          Supervises subordinate laborers and instructs subordinates in the specific methods and procedures of historic construction.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the tools, materials, methods and practices used in the restoration of historic buildings; thorough knowledge of the pertinent rules, regulations and codes which are applicable to restoration construction; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work; some knowledge of the current sources of information and literature pertaining to local history; skill in preparing and using required paints and materials; skill in the use and care of tools, materials and equipment of the trade; ability to lead the work of subordinate employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to work from complex instructions, historic photographs, building specifications, blueprints and sketches; ability to make time, material and cost estimates; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          Either:

          (a)  Completion of two (2) years of vocational education courses in a vocational school program or in an apprentice or training program in carpentry, and four (4) years of work experience in carpentry, two (2) of which must have been in the restoration of historic buildings; or,

         

          (b)  Six (6) years of work experience in carpentry, two (2) of which must have been in the restoration of historic buildings; or,

         

          (c)  An equivalent combination of the above education or training, and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
