DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for developing a plan for the management of lands and the preservation of species within the County parkland. The incumbent analyzes conditions of areas under review and makes recommendations for the utilization of the land. The employee exercises a considerable amount of independent judgement and initiative. Work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Maintains a physical and biological inventory of all open space land within Suffolk County dedicated as parkland, nature preserve, or County bird sanctuary;

          Develops recommendations for the use of acquired lands based upon inventories performed;

          Makes recommendations to the Commissioner on areas for inclusion in the County nature preserve or bird sanctuary;

          Oversees the development and implementation of research programs relating to nature preserves, bird sanctuaries and County parklands;

          Provides technical assistance to the Suffolk County Council on Environmental Quality regarding nature preserve and bird sanctuary matters;

          Prepares interpretive programs and displays promoting the natural resources present and processes occurring in nature preserve areas, bird sanctuaries and County parks;

          Develops policy recommendations relating to environmental and conservation issues;

          Plans and develops scenic and informative nature trails and associated trail guide;

          Supervises Park Rangers assigned to protect nature preserves and bird sanctuary areas.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of natural resource management; thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of compiling, organizing and utilizing scientific data; good knowledge of modern developments, current literature and other sources of information in the field of natural resource management; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; ability to plan and direct the activities of subordinate personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          (a) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Master's Degree in Environmental Conservation or one of the Natural Sciences and two (2) years of experience in natural resource protection activities; or,

 

          (b) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Conservation or one of the Natural Sciences and four (4) years of experience in natural resource protection activities; or,

 

          (c) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
