DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class organizes and administers municipal-owned historic properties.  This position differs from Historic Site Manager in that the Director of Historic Services acquires, restores and prepares many sites and, upon completion, assumes the duties of administering the site.  The incumbent is responsible for supervising a support staff.  In the performance of duties, the employee uses a considerable amount of independent judgment and initiative.  The work is reviewed through conferences, reports and on-site inspections by an administrative supervisor.  Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Supervises the preparation of scale drawings of historic properties;

          Directs recording, maintenance and restoration projects;

          Recommends long-range acquisition program;

          Performs all necessary research and establishes complete files, photographs and historical materials related to municipal County-owned historic properties; 

          Conducts correspondence related to research and development activities and restorations; 

          Prepares budget for the Historic Trust, requisitions supplies and assigns work to support staff;

          Prepares and submits grant proposals to government and private agencies. 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of state and federal procedures, requirements and regulations regarding availability and Historic accreditation of sites; thorough knowledge of requisites for state and federal grants and funds; thorough knowledge of the history of the municipality, County roads, farmland, historic sites and properties; good knowledge of historic architecture and authentic restoration; ability to photograph and prepare scale drawings of historic sites; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community leaders, professional colleagues, organizations, public officials and the general public; ability to analyze facts and to exercise sound judgment in arriving at conclusions; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to keep a variety of records and to prepare and submit reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and four (4) years of experience directing projects in one or more of the following areas:  historic structure maintenance, historic preservation of buildings and sites, adaptive use of old buildings, landmark legislation or museum management. 

 

NOTE: Postgraduate studies can be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the above experience, if the concentration is in one of the above-described areas.

 

          PROMOTIONAL

          Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as an Assistant Director of Historic Services.
