DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class supervises a large and varied staff engaged in serving and safeguarding the public using town beaches and parks.  Work involves the responsibility for the repair of buildings, boardwalks, and parking lots of the beaches and the maintenance of the grounds, ballfields, and playground equipment on the parks.  The incumbent is involved in maintaining personnel, supply, and financial records.  Work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through conferences, records maintained, and reports submitted.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Supervises beach attendants, lifeguards, guards and other personnel engaged in serving and safeguarding the public using town beaches;

            Supervises maintenance and grounds-keeping personnel involved in the maintenance and repair of the grounds, ballfields, playground equipment, and tennis courts of town parks;

            Inspects and supervises the general maintenance and repair of the facilities, installations, and equipment during the off season;

            Attends administrative conferences and discusses needs and accomplishments of the beaches and parks;

            Prepares reports on beach and park activities;

            Orders supplies and prepares the annual budget for the facilities supervised;

            Submits periodic reports on the use of facilities and projected needs for expansion;

            Maintains personnel and time records of the employees.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of beach and park management; good knowledge of the operational and maintenance requirements of typical beach and park facilities and equipment; knowledge of effective supervisory techniques; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships  with the general public; ability to keep records and to prepare and submit reports; ability to plan, supervise and review the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of experience in park supervision or administration.

 

NOTE:  Additional education at a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of four (4) years.
