FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this
class performs an important law enforcement function involving the operation
of a precinct, bureau or section, according to established procedures and
policies of the Police Department.
Responsibilities include assigning officers to their posts, evaluating
their work performance, and instructing them in new and approved police
methods. The incumbent performs both
technical and administrative duties.

TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Directs the activities of patrol
forces, sections or headquarters commands during an assigned shift;
Assigns tasks to subordinates and
reviews operations;
Gives instructions to subordinate
officers as to methods of correcting faults;
Directs raids and makes arrests;
Directs police activities at riots,
serious crimes, fires or unusual disorders;
Investigates crimes where unusual
and/or difficult law enforcement problems are likely to occur;
Prepares complex federal and state
clerical reports of the activities of the police department;
Investigates complaints regarding
activities of the Police Department;
Takes charge of the unit in the
absence of the bureau or section commander;
Dispenses information to the public
regarding departmental policies and methods.

PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of approved practices of
police work; thorough knowledge of controlling laws and ordinances; skill in
the use and care of firearms; ability to operate radio equipment; ability to
lead and direct subordinate officers; ability to deal courteously, but firmly,
with the general public; ability to make oral and written reports; ability to
plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to
full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.

status as a Sergeant (Police).
