DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves enforcing municipal and state laws governing a political unit to protect the lives, property and legal rights of the public. The Police Officer patrols a designated area to assist in emergencies and to apprehend or issue summonses to lawbreakers. The work is performed in accordance with departmental regulations under the supervision of a superior officer and is subject to review through submission of oral and written reports. The duties require proficiency in both the Spanish and English languages. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Patrols
assigned area in a patrol car, on motorcycle or on foot for the preservation of
law and order through the prevention of or detection of criminal acts;
Answers
calls for assistance in connection with automobile accidents and other accident
emergency situations;
Answers
calls regarding robberies, domestic disturbances, homicides, suicides and all
other situations requiring police action or intervention;
Assists
and interacts with the Spanish-speaking public;
Controls
traffic flow when power failure results in loss of traffic signals;
Issues
summonses to violators of traffic safety laws;
Administers
first aid at accident or crime scenes;
Gathers
evidence, locates witnesses and arrests suspects at crime scenes;
Locates
and arrests persons for whom warrants or court orders have been issued.
Good knowledge of the communities, public buildings, landmarks,
roads, parks, industrial and commercial areas in the assigned work area; good
knowledge of first-aid procedures; ability to learn how to care for and use
firearms skillfully; ability to enforce the law with firmness, tact, and
impartiality; ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies; ability to meet physical requirements
established by municipal authority; Spanish and English language proficiency; physical
strength and agility determined by qualifying tests.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma pursuant to Section 58 1 (b) of New York State Civil Service Law by the
date of appointment.
Candidates
must be at least twenty (20) years of age at the time of appointment.
Candidates
who reach their thirty-fifth (35th) birthday before the date of the
written examination are not eligible, except as follows:
Candidates
may have a period of active military duty, up to seven (7) years as defined in
Section 243 (10-a) of the Military Law, deducted from their age for purposes of
determining whether they meet the age requirement.
There will be qualifying medical,
psychological and physical fitness evaluations.
Candidates will be subject to a
background investigation that will include a polygraph.
There will be a qualifying Spanish
language examination.
Candidates must be United State
Citizens at the time of appointment.
Possession
of a valid
After appointment, candidates will be required to successfully complete a Police Officer Training Course recognized by the New York State Municipal Training Council.
