DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is primarily involved in patrol and traffic
direction. The incumbent is responsible
for tasks assigned by a superior officer.
In the performance of duties, the constable has considerable
responsibility for the exercise of sound judgment in emergencies. Ordinary procedures and special assignments are
carried out under the immediate supervision of a superior officer. Does related work as required
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Directs pedestrian and
vehicular traffic at scenes of accident, fires, public assemblages and at busy
thoroughfares and intersections;
Patrols parking areas
and issues summonses for parking violations;
Answers questions for
and directs the public;
Makes reports of
activities as required;
Testifies in court or
grand jury as required;
Assumes police duties
as directed.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Some knowledge of the geography, and road networks of the assigned
area; some knowledge of first aid methods; ability to understand and carry out
oral and written instructions; ability to develop skill in the use and care of firearms
if so directed; ability to make detailed accurate reports as required; ability
to enforce the law with firmness, tact and impartiality, and to deal
courteously with the general public; ability to react quickly and calmly in
emergencies; physical condition commensurate with the demands of this position
as well as such specific physical requirements as may be established by
competent authority.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or the possession of a high school
equivalency diploma.
