FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under direct supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for guarding and caring for persons detained at a police station or detention facility. The incumbent searches prisoners upon arrest and is responsible for escorting prisoners to court appearances. The work may include the occasional performance of minor clerical tasks when attention to prisoners is not required. Duties are performed under the direct supervision of Police Officers or Deputy Sheriffs. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Guards persons detained at a police station or detention facility
pending hearing or transfer to a penal institution;
Cares for prisoners who are sick or
intoxicated;
Accompanies prisoners to court and
remains with them until the case has been disposed of;
May search prisoners for weapons,
contraband, drugs, and other harmful articles;
May observe inmates in cells to
assure prisoners' well being and adherence to regulations and rules;
May be responsible for the
cleanliness and sanitation of the dormitory and cells of detention facilities;
May transport prisoners via bus or
van to court accompanied by Police Officers or Deputy Sheriffs;
May perform clerical tasks such as
sorting documents, data entry, filing, opening and distributing station mail;
May be required to answer phones and
relay messages;
Maintains Detention Log with
periodic entries.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Some knowledge of first aid methods and procedures;
ability to learn operating policies, rules and regulations of the detention
centers; ability to deal courteously, but firmly with prisoners; ability to
deal with people under adverse emotional stress; ability to act quickly and
calmly in emergencies; ability to understand and carry out written and oral
instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from a
standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
1. There will be
a qualifying psychological evaluation.
2. For positions in the Suffolk County Police
Department and Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office there will also be a qualifying
medical evaluation.
3. Depending on the nature of the assignment,
candidates may be required to possess the appropriate license issued by the New
York State Department of Motor Vehicles.
Type of license will be determined by the appointing authority with
respect to the type of vehicle to be operated.
License must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
