The work involves responsibility
for purchasing, repairing and storing ordnance equipment for the Suffolk County
Police Department. The employee
purchases ordnance equipment according to specifications, is storekeeper for
all such equipment and performs technical repair procedures on firearms,
maintenance equipment and tools. The
work is performed under the general supervision of Police Department officials,
but responsibility for technical reliability lies with the incumbent; performs
related work as required.
Repairs
firearms using handtools and machines such as grinders, lathes, and millers;
Fits
action and barrel into stock and aligns parts;
Installs
parts such as sights, pistol grips and recoil pads;
Discharges
firearms, corrects alignment and assembly of piece;
Performs
clerical duties in connection with purchasing
procedures, inventory and repair
and maintenance work performed;
Gives
lectures to Police Recruits on care and cleaning of firearms.

Graduation
from a standard senior high school, training in firearms use and repair from a
major firearms company and three years of diagnostic and repair experience in
firearms and ordnance equipment.
Licensure
as Gunsmith in Suffolk County
New
York State motor vehicle operator's license.
