DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for instructing new members of the
Suffolk County Police Department in the handling and use of handguns, shotguns,
machine guns, tear gas, mace and
grenades. The work also involves annual
checks on the marksmanship of all members of the Suffolk County Police
Department. Work is performed under the
general supervision of Police Academy staff members. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Instructs new members
of the Suffolk County Police Department in the safe handling of firearms and
skill in their use;
Conducts group
practice in marksmanship and demonstrates techniques in improving proficiency;
Instructs in methods used
in discharging firearms under varying conditions, such as during daylight and
darkness and at stationary and moving objects;
Demonstrates
techniques of accurate and defensive marksmanship;
Loads and unloads
heavy cases of targets, ammunition, tear gas, clay targets and metal targets.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the handling, use and care of firearms and other
weapons used by the Suffolk County Police Department; thorough knowledge of
safety precautions to follow when using firearms and other weapons; good
knowledge of the methods and procedures used in carrying out an effective
instructional program in marksmanship; skill in marksmanship; ability to keep
accurate records of scores attained by recruits and al other police personnel
on the firing range; ability to conduct verbal training sessions for large
groups of police personnel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from high
school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three years
experience as:
a) N.R.A. certified instructor in rifle and
pistol; or,
b) Federal firearms instructor; or,
c) Police firearms instructor; or,
d) Military firearms instructor.
