DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the acceptance, classification and storage of evidence in the Medical Examiner's Office or the Police Department.  The employee is required to catalog, safeguard and maintain such evidence.  Work is performed under established policies and procedures.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Receives and stores evidence and maintains inventory control;

            Enters inventory control data on a computer terminal;

            Inspects evidence for general conformity to the description on the evidence sheet;

            Releases evidence to authorized persons and obtains receipts for same;

            Develops and maintains efficient storage methods, including the allocation of proper bins or other storage areas;

            May be called on to testify in Court to identify inventoried evidence;

            May be asked to transport evidence between Police Department precincts and County agencies;

            Provides written reports on evidence to the Medical Examiner or the Police Department.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of Departmental policies and procedures with regard to safeguarding evidence; good knowledge of cataloging, record keeping and report writing; skill in operating a computer terminal keyboard; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to maintain good working relationships with others; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience in inventory control, stock-keeping or clerical work.

 

NOTE:  Education from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State

will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, candidates must possess a valid New York State Driver's License.
