DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under direct supervision, an employee
in this class patrols airport grounds on foot or by car, and responds to
requests for assistance to insure passenger and airport security. Work involves considerable public contact in
the daily performance of duties.
Supervision is received from a technical or
administrative supervisor through observation of work and conferences. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Detects
and takes immediate action to control any actual or attempted penetration of
the air operations area by a person whose entry is not
authorized;
Responds
to requests for assistance from aviation tenants and patrons to insure
compliance with the Airport Security Plan and Federal and State Aviation
Regulations;
Responds
to emergencies involving weapons and/or potential hijack situations;
Patrols
airport terminal and air operations area to insure safety and security of
airport;
Responds
to calls for assistance by airlines, airport tenants, and fire rescue teams;
Assists
in first-aid treatment when necessary;
Directs
vehicle traffic in landside areas as required;
Provides
information and assistance to the public;
Makes
oral or written reports of all occurrences on grounds and in buildings to an
administrative supervisor;
Reports
security violations to airport tenants;
May
operate a patrol vehicle.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of
effective modern security measures; good knowledge of what constitutes legally
and socially acceptable conduct in public buildings and facilities; good knowledge of airport geography and facilities;
ability to detect and report suspicious activities and evidence of property
loss or damage; ability to react quickly and effectively to emergencies;
ability to enforce applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations
with tact and firmness; ability to understand and follow oral and written
instructions; ability to express oneself clearly and accurately, both orally
and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
1) There will be qualifying
medical, psychological and physical fitness evaluations*.
2) Candidates must be at least 21 years of age at the
time of appointment.
3) At the time of appointment and
during employment in this title employees must
possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
4) Candidate
must be a United States Citizen at the time of appointment.
5) At the
time of appointment to a position designated in Section 2.10
of New York State Criminal Procedure Law as having peace officer status,
candidates will be required to possess a valid Suffolk County Pistol Permit and
maintain the permit throughout employment in this title.
6) Candidate will be required to successfully complete a CPR/AED Course given by the American Heart Association (AHA) or equivalent health care provider during the first year of employment, and must maintain this certification throughout employment in this title.
7) After
appointment, persons designated as peace officers in Section 2.10 of New York
State Criminal Procedure Law will be required to obtain a Peace Officer Training Certificate recognized by the New York
State Municipal Police Training Council.
*At the discretion of the Appointing
Authority, for appointees with other than competitive status, qualifying
evaluations may be waived for candidates with current or prior status in a
peace or police officer title who are in possession of current New York State
MPTC certification as a peace or police officer within the following
guidelines:
a.)
Pursuant to §2.30 6) of Criminal Procedure Law:
Separated for less than 2
years after having served for less than 2 consecutive years as a peace officer
in NYS, or;
Separated for less than 4
years after having served as a peace officer in NYS for more than 2 consecutive years.
b.) Pursuant to §209-q 1) b) of General Municipal Law:
Separated for less than 2
years after having served for less than 2 consecutive years as a police officer
in NYS, or;
Separated for less than 4
years after having served as a police officer in NYS for more than 2
consecutive years, or;
Up to 10 years after separation with an approved police officer refresher course.
