AIRPORT SECURITY
SUPERVISOR 5075
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general
direction, an employee in this class performs responsible supervisory and
administrative duties in directing the security operations at a municipal
airport. Work involves considerable
dealings with public officials as well as with the general
public. Supervision is exercised over airport security personnel. Work is performed
under the general supervision of the department head or other administrator and
established federal airport security guidelines. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises and
assigns airport security personnel to various posts;
Coordinates
training of new personnel in airport security operations;
Controls
maintenance and operation of various security equipment;
Participates
in airport emergency program in conjunction with fire rescue activities;
Acts
as liaison with airport tenants concerning airport security;
Supervises
and participates in security control of special public functions at airport;
Maintains
various records regarding security operation.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of security work; good
knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations governing security operations at a
municipal airport; good knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques
of modern office administration; knowledge of Transportation Security
Regulations, Part 1542; ability to establish and maintain effective
relationships with public officials and the general public; ability to analyze
facts, arrive at sound conclusions and make recommendations; ability to plan,
assign and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly, both orally
and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma, and seven (7) years of experience in security operations at a
commercial airport.
NOTE: Additional education in the field of criminal
justice will be substituted for experience on a
year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.
PROMOTIONAL
One
(1) year of permanent competitive status as a Principal Airport Security Guard.
Two
(2) years of permanent competitive status as a Senior Airport Security Guard.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
(1)
There will be a qualifying psychological evaluation for
open-competitive candidates.
(2)
Candidate must be at least 21 years of age at the time of
appointment.
(3)
At the time of appointment and during employment in this title employees must possess a valid license to operate a
motor vehicle in New York State.
(4)
Candidate must be a United States Citizen at the time of
appointment.
(5)
At the time of appointment to a position designated in
Section 2.10 of New York State Criminal Procedure Law as having peace officer
status, open-competitive candidates will be required to possess a valid Suffolk
County Pistol Permit. Employees must maintain the permit throughout employment in this title.
(6)
Open-competitive candidates will be required to successfully complete a CPR/AED Course given by the
American Heart Association (AHA) or equivalent health care provider during the
first year employment. Employees in this
title must maintain this certification throughout employment.
(7)
After open-competitive appointment, persons designated as
peace officers in Section 2.10 of New York State Criminal Procedure Law will be
required to obtain a Peace Officer Training Certificate recognized by the New
York State Municipal Police Training Council.
