DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for collecting daily cash receipts from parking meters, and issuing summonses in the enforcement of local ordinances pertaining to the use of meters.  Responsibility may be included for issuing summonses for violations of parking ordinances, such as use of handicapped spaces without proper certification and parking in no-parking zones.  Work is performed independently in accordance with detailed rules and instructions, and is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through inspections and records kept. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Collects coins from parking meters and delivers coin bags for separation, counting and depositing; inspects meters for damage, tampering, or defective operation;

            Patrols areas where meters are located to prevent and detect violations of local ordinances governing parking and deposit of fees;

            Writes and distributes summonses for overtime violation at parking meters;

            May write summonses for violations of ordinances governing use of handicapped parking spaces and no-parking zones;

            May perform minor maintenance of meters and the straightening of stanchions.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of local ordinances governing parking and parking meters; ability to use simple hand tools; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to prepare simple oral and written reports; ability to deal with the general public in a courteous and tactful manner; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                         

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.

 

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Depending upon the nature of the assignment, at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees may be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
