DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for the overall administration and supervision of the operations of the Fire, Rescue Communications Bureau, which serves fire departments and ambulance companies throughout the County. Responsibilities of the position will also include planning, design and project management of emergency dispatch and communications systems, and coordination of communication center construction with bureau operations. The incumbent is also responsible for directing the unit in times of large-scale emergencies and for coordinating the communications of a large number of emergency service units when necessary.  Work is supervised by higher-level administrators through written reports and conferences. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Administers and supervises the operations of the Fire, Rescue Communications Bureau;

            Supervises, schedules and evaluates work performed by bureau personnel;

            Institutes bureau policy and provides training for personnel;

            Plans, designs and implements a variety of communications systems, and coordinates the construction of the communications center with bureau operations;

            Acts as a liaison to county departments and numerous councils and commissions to provide information and technical support;

            Oversees maintenance of facilities and equipment and writes bid specifications for equipment and maintenance contracts;

            Directs the bureau in times of large-scale emergencies or disasters and coordinates the communications of a large number of emergency services units.

           

           

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the procedures and practices of the Fire/Rescue/EMS/Emergency Management program in responding to requests for medical, fire and rescue assis­tance; thorough knowledge of emergency medical, fire and rescue terminology; thorough knowledge of the operation and design of the Fire/Rescue/EMS/Emergency Management computer system and of two-way radio communications equipment; ability to administer the functions of the Fire/Rescue/EMS/Emergency Management System in a manner conducive to efficiency, full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            PROMOTIONAL

            Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as an Emergency Services Dispatcher III.
