DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for performing the duties necessary for the establishment and maintenance of municipal lighting facilities, and for examination and correction of lighting plans submitted to the town for area lighting.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Plans for, and revises as necessary, projected town lighting requirements;

            Investigates need for improved lighting services upon request of civic groups or individuals;

            Surveys lighting areas to be improved to assure proper location of lights and adequate level of illumination;

            Determines service areas for tax roll purposes;

            Prepares and controls town light budgets and reviews energy changes by LILCO/LIPA;

            Examines completed installation and enters in control ledger;

            Presents petitions for service and LILCO/LIPA estimates to town board for approval;

            Utilizes computerized mapping and inventory systems.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Some knowledge of the methods of establishing proper levels of public area lighting; some knowledge of the methods of bookkeeping and of the preparation of financial reports; working knowledge of computerized mapping and inventory systems; ability to deal courteously and effectively with the general public; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to conduct field surveys and research projects in the meeting of town lighting needs; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school, vocational school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and three (3) years of experience in the maintenance, installation or inspection of lighting systems.

           

NOTE: Experience will be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.  Relevant education beyond high school from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State in Electrical Engineering or a related field will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license at the time of appointment and throughout the period of employment.
