FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class is involved in the supervision and performance of field inspections to determine compliance with the refuse codes and regulations of a municipal jurisdiction. The incumbent assigns routine inspections and performs some inspections personally. The incumbent supervises the inspection of refuse collection work performed by private companies under contract with a municipality to determine if the work is being performed in accordance with the established contractual agreement, and may supervise inspections performed at a landfill transfer station of loads of general refuse and construction and demolition material. Work is performed under the general supervision of assigned supervisory personnel; and is reviewed through oral and written reports and by occasional field visits. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Assigns and supervises the work of
Sanitation Inspectors;
Investigates complaints of
violations of refuse disposal regulations; interviews property owners, tenants
and complainants to determine nature of violations; recommends measures for
correcting the violations if one exists;
Inspects refuse collection work
being performed by private companies under contract with a municipality in
order to insure compliance with contractual agreement; inspects private
companies in order to insure compliance with the ordinances and regulations
pertaining to refuse collection;
Prepares required reports on
inspections conducted and on recommended actions to correct violations;
May issue summonses on violations of
town sanitation code.

Good knowledge of
legal procedures as related to the enforcement of regulations; ability to
rapidly learn the rules and regulations applying to the collection of refuse
and to apply this knowledge to specific inspectional tasks; ability to follow
oral and written instructions; ability to supervise employees in a manner
conducive to full performance and good morale; ability to make inspections and
to ascertain facts through simple investigation; ability to enforce regulations
firmly, tactfully and impartially and to maintain effective public relations;
ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a standard senior
high school, or vocational school in a job related field, or possession of a
high school equivalency diploma, and three (3) years of experience in
inspectional or investigative work in conformance with established standards.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years of permanent
competitive status as a Sanitation Inspector.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENT
At the time of
appointment, and during employment in this title, employees must possess a
valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
