FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general
supervision, an employee in this class performs technical work inspecting
construction plans, alterations and installation of all signs within a town in
order to ascertain compliance with local codes and ordinances. Duties are carried out with considerable
independence, and work is reviewed by supervisors through oral and written reports
and physical reinspection where necessary.
Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Reviews construction plans of signs
before construction to ensure conformance with local codes;
Inspects newly completed as well as
existing signs for code compliance;
Investigates complaints regarding
sign violations;
Assists applicants in the
preparation of sign permits;
Periodically inspects for, and
enforces permit renewal;
Occasionally meets with sign company
representatives to discuss manufacture, use and display of signs within a
town.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the various types of signs and the methods of their construction;
good knowledge of existing codes and regulations governing signs and their
installation in a particular township; ability to recognize faulty sign
construction or installation; ability to read and interpret sign plans and to
recognize deviations from such plans in the completed signs; ability to enforce
codes and regulations in a firm tactful and impartial manner; ability to keep
records and make written and oral reports; ability to express oneself clearly
and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate
with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a standard senior
high school, vocational school or possession of a high school diploma, and one
(1) year of experience in sign or building construction work.
NOTE: Experience will
be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS
At the time of
appointment and during employment in this title, employees will be required to
possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
All employees
hired after January 1, 1985 must successfully complete the required basic
training program entitled Minimum Standards for Code Enforcement Personnel,
established by the State of New York Fire Fighting and Code Enforcement
Personnel Standards and Education Commission.
The program must be completed in the appropriate time period as
specified in the regulations, and upon completion, the required in-service
training programs must be attended as scheduled.
