DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for hearing and determining citations of alleged violations by owners of real property of any provisions of the Zoning Code and of conditions of or imposed on zoning-related grants and/or approvals by the Town Board, Planning Board, and Zoning Board of Appeals.  The incumbent shall also decide all procedural and substantive questions relating to the citations and impositions of civil penalties.  Work is performed in accordance with the established laws, rules and regulations and departmental policies and is reviewed by the Town Attorney for adherence to these standards.  Performs related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Conducts hearings involving issues related to the violation of zoning regulations in the Town;

          Holds other hearings regarding violations of Town Code (i.e. Tow truck operators, shellfish, and building code);

          Renders decisions in the above referenced matters;

          Reviews violations, checking for accuracy of Town Code;

          Schedules hearings;

          Keeps and maintains files of the proceedings.

         

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Knowledge of legal procedures related to the enforcement of regulatory codes; ability to acquire knowledge of applicable zoning regulations, and related departmental policies and procedures; ability to prepare a variety of records and reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            a) Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience in the review or interpretation of town code; or,

            b) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six (6) years of experience in the review or interpretation of town code; or,

            c) Possession of a license to practice law in New York State; or,

            d) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
