SENIOR ELECTRICAL
INSPECTOR 5174
An employee in this class supervises the work of
Electrical Inspectors by scheduling their daily activities and by reviewing the
results of their work. A significant
part of the work is discussions held with contractors, builders and owners concerning
approval or disapproval of plans of electrical installations and the
explanation of electrical codes and standards in relationship to the plans submitted. Work is performed with considerable
independence and is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through
conferences and written reports. Does
related work as required.
Plans,
assigns and reviews work of Electrical Inspectors and makes re-inspections as
indicated;
Oversees discussions of electrical
installations with contractors, property owners and interested parties to
explain and interpret electrical codes and standards;
Supervises
the investigation of complaints of violations of electrical codes; may testify
in court concerning violations;
Consults
with supervisor concerning new regulatory codes;
Examines
specifications, blue prints and plans of electrical installations for
compliance with codes and standards;
Upon
completion of electrical projects, performs final inspections, approves or
disapproves projects and prepares appropriate documentation;
Writes
reports regarding project conditions, actions taken and recommendations for
further action.
Comprehensive knowledge of methods and practices involved
in installing, repairing and maintaining a variety of electrical installations,
equipment and appliances; thorough knowledge of possible defects and faults in
electrical systems and appliances, and of standard testing practices; thorough
knowledge of the codes and regulations governing electrical installations in
Suffolk County; ability to detect and locate defective wiring and to ascertain
the required remediation; ability to read and interpret electrical construction
plans and specifications; ability to enforce codes and regulations firmly,
tactfully and impartially; ability to plan, schedule and supervise work in a
manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to keep records
and to write reports; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both
orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
a)
Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or
registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering,
and three (3) years of experience in the maintenance, installation or inspection
of structural electrical systems; or,
b)
Graduation from a standard senior high school, vocational school or possession
of a high school equivalency diploma, and seven (7) years of experience in the
maintenance, installation or inspection of structural electrical systems; or,
c) An
equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of
a) and b).
NOTE: Education with
courses in an electrician program from a trade school that is accredited,
registered or licensed by a State Education Department may be substituted for experience beyond high school, to a maximum
of two (2) years.
Two (2) years of permanent competitive
status as an Electrical Inspector.
At the
time of appointment, and during employment in this title, employees must
possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
All
employees hired after January 1, 1985 must successfully complete the required
basic training program entitled Minimum Standards for Code Enforcement
Personnel, established by the State of New York Fire Fighting and Code
Enforcement Personnel Standards and Education Commission. The program must be completed in the
appropriate time period as specified in the regulations, and upon completion,
the required in-service training programs must be attended as scheduled.
