DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the work of Code Enforcement Officers or for specialized duties which are personally performed.  These duties are exclusive of the enforcement of Vehicle and Traffic laws as well as Suffolk County and/or New York State laws.  This is NOT a law enforcement position.  Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Keeps records of violations reported and investigated and maintains them through final disposition;

            Transmits orders to Code Enforcement Officers personally or in writing;

            Assigns, instructs, supervises and directs a force of subordinate Code Enforcement Officers in the enforcement of local codes and ordinances;

            Prepares reports on activities during assigned shift;

            Patrols the jurisdiction by foot or automobile to observe subordinate staff and investigate code and ordinance violations, such as litter, open container, noise, peddling, dumping, parking violations, etc;

            Issues summonses and testifies in court;

            Notifies Police Department immediately when activities of a criminal nature are observed.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONNEL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of modern principles and practices of code and ordinance enforcement work; ability to be firm and courteous with the general public; ability to maintain records and prepare reports; ability to supervise the activities of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school, or vocational school in a job related field, or possession of a high school equiva­lency diploma and two (2) years of experience in the investigation or enforce­ment of municipal codes and ordinances.

 

NOTE:  Relevant education from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

 

PROMOTIONAL

            Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Code Enforcement Officer.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

At the time of appointment, and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
