DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general
supervision, an employee in this class assists the Code Enforcement Supervisor
in planning and directing the code enforcement activities of the jurisdiction. Responsibilities include supervision of all
code enforcement personnel, evaluation of their work performance, and
instruction of code enforcement methods and techniques. The work is exclusive of enforcement of
Vehicle and Traffic laws as well as all other Suffolk County and/or New York
State laws. This is NOT a law
enforcement position. Does related work
as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Directs the activities of Code
Enforcement Officers and Senior Code Enforcement Officers during an assigned
shift;
Schedules tours of subordinates to
provide optimum coverage for code enforcement;
Assists Code Enforcement Supervisor
in the operation and policy preparation of the department;
Assists the Code Enforcement
Supervisor in the preparation of performance ratings of all Code Enforcement
personnel;
Assists in the preparation of the
budget;
Patrols the jurisdiction by foot or
automobile to observe subordinate staff and investigate code and ordinance
violations, such as litter, open container, noise, peddling, dumping, paring
violations, etc.;
Gives testimony in court
proceedings, judicial hearings or administrative hearings;
Notifies Police Department
immediately when activities of a criminal nature are observed.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of proper code enforcement procedures and practices; thorough
knowledge of controlling codes and local ordinances; ability to lead and direct
code enforcement personnel; ability to deal firmly with the general public;
ability to prepare oral and written reports; ability to plan, assign and
supervise the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and
high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a standard senior
high school, or vocational school in a job related field, or possession of a
high school equivalency diploma, and three (3) years of experience in the
investigation or enforcement of municipal codes and ordinances.
NOTE: Relevant
education from
a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State will be substituted for experience on a
year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.
PROMOTIONAL
Three (3) years of permanent
competitive status as a Senior Code Enforcement Officer.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS
At the time of
appointment, and during employment in this title, employees must possess a
valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
