CODE ENFORCEMENT SUPERVISOR 5179
An employee in
this class works under the direction of a Village Board. The incumbent is responsible for planning and
directing the code enforcement activities of the jurisdiction, and is exclusive
of the enforcement of Vehicle and Traffic laws as well as all other Suffolk
County and/or New York State laws. This
is NOT a law enforcement position.

TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Coordinates the operations,
procedures, and policies of a Code Enforcement agency in a local jurisdiction;
Organizes code enforcement offices
into working units and issues orders through Senior Code Enforcement Officers;
Directs the preparation of written
reports, reviews reports of officers;
Prepares comprehensive reports for
review and action by municipal officials;
Prepares department budget requests,
recommends purchase of supplies and equipment;
Investigates allegations of
misconduct made against Code Enforcement Officers.
Patrols the jurisdiction by foot or
automobile to observe staff and investigate code and ordinance violations, such
as litter, open container, noise, peddling, dumping, parking violations, etc.;
Notifies Police Department
immediately when activities of a criminal nature are observed.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive
knowledge of code enforcement procedures and practices; thorough knowledge of
controlling codes and ordinances; ability to direct all officers, and maintain
proper communication with Village officials; ability to prepare comprehensive
written reports; ability to plan and supervise and assign the work of personnel
in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a standard senior
high school, or vocational school in a job related field, or possession of a
high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience in the
investigation or enforcement of municipal codes and ordinances.
NOTE: Relevant
education from
a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year
basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.
PROMOTIONAL
Four (4) years of permanent
competitive status as a Senior Code Enforcement Officer; or,
Two (2) years permanent competitive
status as an Assistant Code Enforcement Supervisor.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS
At the time of
appointment, and during employment in this title, employees must possess a
valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
