DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general direction, an employee in this class performs administrative duties relating to the processing of summonses issued by the town's code enforcement personnel.  The incumbent is expected to exercise considerable independent initiative and judgment in the execution of job duties.  The work requires contact with code enforcement personnel, Assistant Town Attorneys, court personnel and the general public.  Work is performed under the direction of the Ordinance Enforcement Officer; and is reviewed through reports and conferences.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Prepares weekly District Court calendar including the explanation of town codes, warrants, adjournments, criminal summonses and pending calendars;

          Interviews all inspectors in relation to court calendar;

          Reviews summonses and ascertains whether defendants are still in violation or have since complied with Town Code;

          Reviews all summonses as to form;

          Researches and interprets Town Code in order to complete informative and accusatory sections of all summonses issued;

          Assists Town Attorney in Supreme Court actions;

          Assists Town Attorney in District Court while prosecuting code violators, i.e., arranges conferences for Assistant Town Attorney, gathers witnesses, documentations, expert testimony etc. and manages court calendar and conferences;

          Answers questions from the public concerning Town Code.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of local codes and ordinances; good knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures necessary for the enforcement of town codes; knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures used in investigative work; knowledge of District Court proceedings; ability to assist in the preparation of cases for court; ability to make investigations and inspections and to make independent decisions pertinent to the legality of the act; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and two (2) years of experience in the administration of court proceedings, or in inspectional or investigative work utilizing codes or standardized procedures and regulations.
