DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class promotes economical water usage among customers of a water district.  An incumbent identifies above average water consumption and seeks to achieve voluntary compliance with water conservation measures.  Responsibility is included for monitoring mandatory annual inspections and timely replacement of water meters.  The emphasis of the work is on customer relations rather than on technical aspects of water service.  Work is performed under the general supervision of a water district superintendent.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Meets with water district customers to make recommendations about methods to decrease excess water usage;

          Identifies above average consumers via comparisons of computerized usage figures with industry standards;

          Gains familiarity with available water conservation measures through consultations with engineers and promotes engineers' recommendations among water district consumers;

          Monitors records of annual inspections of cross connection control devices and meets with users to achieve compliance with inspection regulations;

          Monitors records of water meter installation and ensures timely replacement of worn out meters;

          Distributes conservation information and printed material to appropriate users;

          Gives presentations to business and community groups to publicize and promote water conservation;

          Prepares progress reports on success of program.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Ability to gain familiarity with water conservation measures and learn which are applicable to specific users; ability to achieve voluntary compliance among water district customers; ability to speak in public to a variety of audiences; ability to develop a rapport with a wide range of people; ability to organize facts and present them appropriately to schools, businesses and commu­nity groups; ability to prepare reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school, or vocational school in a job related field, or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience in sales, customer relations, or public relations.

 

NOTE:  Additional education beyond high school from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the above experience.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
