DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS  

The work involves assisting in the direction of the functions of the Department of Building and Housing in a large town.  The incumbent is respon­sible for coordinating the work of the inspectors engaged in the various bureaus of the department.  The work is reviewed through evaluation of written reports and through departmental conferences; performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists the Director in supervising the activities of the bureaus of the Building and Housing Department in the work of enforcing town codes and ordinances;

          Monitors proper follow up on inspections and completeness and accuracy of reports;

          Advises inspectors in handling difficult cases and assists in gaining compliance of code violators;

          Assists in preparing departmental budget and activity reports.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of laws, codes and ordinances regulating building and housing; thorough knowledge of building methods and materials; ability to manage inspection units in an efficient and productive manner; ability to keep records and prepare reports; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the posi­tion.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in engineering and eight (8) years of experience in civil engineering and building construction.

 

NOTE: Additional relevant experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four years.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

All employees hired after January 1, 1985 must successfully complete the required basic training program entitled Minimum Standards for Code Enforcement Personnel, established by the State of New York Fire Fighting and Code Enforcement Personnel Standards and Education Commission.  The program must be completed in the appropriate time period as specified in the regulations, and upon completion, the required in-service training programs must be attended as scheduled.
