DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under direct supervision, an employee in this class performs routine, simple investigation work regarding violations of the labor and consumer protection laws that are monitored by the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs. An employee in this class performs investigations that require little independent decision making and follow well-defined procedures. Investigations Assistants refer information collected to higher-level staff for complaint resolution. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Collects and reports information
regarding violations of labor and consumer protection laws that are monitored
by the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs;
Conducts onsite visits to
businesses, vendors and trade organizations to determine compliance with local
laws and requirements;
Provides information to consumers,
vendors and the public while in the field regarding compliance with local labor
and consumer protection laws;
Prepares notices of violations to
vendors and licensees who violate specific local labor and consumer protection
laws and forwards notices to supervisor for review and action;
Researches and reviews local labor laws
such as the Living Wage Law, Lawful Hiring, as well as consumer protection laws,
such as those pertaining to Caterers, Dry Cleaning Establishments, Outdoor Furnaces
and others that promote a fair and vibrant marketplace for business and
consumers;
Accesses the Department’s
computerized database to obtain information about various licenses.
FULL
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Some
knowledge of the applicable local laws, statutes, rules and regulations pertaining
to deceptive trade practices, licensing and labor laws; some knowledge of the
principles and methods involved in investigative field work; ability to
ascertain facts through inspection, interview and observation; ability to
conduct research via a computerized database; ability to deal tactfully with
the public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
with co-workers and the general public; ability to express oneself clearly and
concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
Graduation from a standard senior
high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and two (2)
years of experience performing inspections or investigations or working as a
tradesperson in any of the building construction trades.
NOTE: Additional
education beyond high school from a college with federally-authorized
accreditation or registration by NY State may be substituted for the required
experience.
NECESSARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment and during employment in this
title, employees will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor
vehicle in New York State.
