DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

Under general supervision, an employee in this class plans, coordinates and administers a consumer education and information program within Suffolk County. Work involves the planning, drafting and dissemination of syllabi on the primary, secondary and adult educational levels, as well as literature on current consumer topics. The incumbent conducts studies of the needs and resources in the development of consumer affairs programs for the County. Work is reviewed through personal conferences and through the review of written reports. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

          Develops and conducts a consumer education and information program;

          Conducts research studies and prepares reports on matters concerning consumer education;

          Assists in drafting speeches and testimony regarding consumer affairs;

          Addresses organizations, consumer groups, and community associations on matters concerning consumer education;

          Plans and drafts pamphlets, brochures and other literature on consumer education and affairs for distribution to the general public;

          Organizes a speaker's bureau on consumer affairs;

          Maintains working relationships with school districts in implementing consumer education program;

          Prepares written reports.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Good knowledge of federal, state and local laws dealing with consumer affairs; good knowledge of literature, equipment and other materials needed in an educational program of consumer affairs; good knowledge of recent developments in the field of consumer affairs education; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public; ability to plan and develop curricular and lesson plans for educational instruction; ability to express oneself clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and one (1) year of experience in consumer affairs, consumer education, or consumer organization, which includes the preparation and writing of consumer affairs brochures and bulletins.
