DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in
this class is responsible for establishing a training program and conducting all
training activities for a fire department and its companies: including, but not
limited to, department and company drills; probationary member training;
classroom, hands-on and driver training, and annual recertification. The
employee shall maintain program records as required to ensure compliance with
federal, state, local and departmental regulations. Work is performed under the direction of an
administrative supervisor and is reviewed through observation and reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Develops and
implements training programs and class curricula to ensure compliance with
federal, state and local regulations;
Updates the
training program and curricula as needed to maintain compliance with federal,
state and local regulations;
Instructs and
evaluates firefighter performance in field training and classroom training,
such as apparatus placement, hose handling and vehicle extrication;
Reports to the
Chief of the department and the Board of Fire Commissioners regarding
activities and training deficiencies;
Makes
recommendations for training program improvement;
Serves as liaison
with the Chief of the department and Company Officers to identify and
strengthen any weaknesses in firefighters’ training development;
Schedules
weekly/monthly training classes;
Maintains training
information in the Red Alert system.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge
of the principles, practices and techniques of modern firefighting and
prevention; thorough knowledge of the literature, equipment and other materials
needed in the instruction of firefighting, fire prevention and fields of fire
safety; thorough knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations governing
firefighting, fire safety, fire prevention and detection; good knowledge of the
modern developments and current literature available and sources of information
pertaining to fire education; ability to develop, plan and present effective
fire safety and training programs for all levels of experience; ability to
express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; ability to
maintain records and prepare reports; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS

Certification as a Fire Instructor I.
