DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is responsible for the planning, development
and presentation of special fire awareness programs to civic clubs, youth
groups and other interested persons. The
incumbent works within the guidelines of departmental policy, but is expected
to exercise independent initiative and judgment in the development and
presentation of programs. Assignments
are received from the Chief Fire Marshal or other administrative supervisor who
reviews work through conferences, reports and observation of work in
progress. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Plans and develops
special fire awareness programs for presentation to various civic and youth
groups;
Arranges publicity for
the radio, television and press regarding fire prevention activities;
Conducts classes for schoolchildren
on fire awareness, including fire drill procedures and fire safety habits;
Assists fire district
personnel in conducting programs to educate personnel and patients in nursing
homes and hospitals in fire safety and evacuation procedures.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of modern fire prevention techniques and of technical
sources of fire hazards; knowledge of the methods and techniques involved in
planning and presenting fire awareness programs; knowledge of the modern developments,
current literature available and sources of information pertaining to the
fields of fire education; ability to establish and maintain public interest in
fire awareness education programs; ability to establish and maintain good
working relationships with fire district personnel and the general public;
ability to plan and present effective fire awareness education programs for
groups of all ages; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both
orally and in writing; ability to maintain records and prepare reports; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a
standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma,
and four (4) years of experience in firefighting or fire prevention, in either
a private organization or a volunteer fire company organized under the laws of
New York State, including two (2) years of experience planning, developing and
conducting fire safety and fire protection programs.
