DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general direction, an employee in this class performs responsible work in developing plans and alternatives for coping with fires and other emergencies in a Fire Protection District.  The incumbent maintains and updates records to reflect changes in the variable factors as they occur.  Assignments are received and work is performed under the general direction of the Board of Fire Commissioners.  Work is reviewed through conferences and reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Complies data regarding locations of all buildings, hydrants, wells, swimming pools, special hazards and other factors having a bearing on fires and other emergencies;

          Maintains and revises composite maps of fire routes indicating properties within the jurisdiction, fire hydrants, wells, pools, sprinklers and standpipes;

          Assists in coordinating budgeting expenditures, preparation of fire reports and scheduling of personnel for proper coverage;

          Assists in preparing Fire Department budget and other departmental reports;

          Submits written and oral reports to Board of Fire Commissioners as required.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough geographical knowledge of the Fire Protection District particular­ly with respect to its structures, road networks, water sources and supplies; good knowledge of modern fire fighting and prevention techniques; good knowledge of modern fire fighting equipment, its uses and application to various types of fires; ability to maintain maps and records and prepare comprehensive reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Fire Chief, Board of Fire Commissioners, Volunteer Firemen and the general public; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          a)  Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of paid experience in fire fight­ing or fire prevention work; or,

         

          b)  Eight (8) years of experience as a Volunteer Fire Fighter; or,

         

          c)  An equivalent combination of the above education and experience as defined by the limits of a) and b).
