DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is
responsible for obtaining information regarding the construction, physical
arrangement, utilities and other schematics of commercial and private buildings
within a fire district, and for developing and maintaining a database of this
information to be used by fire responders.
Assignments are received and work is performed under the general
direction of the Board of Fire Commissioners.
Work is reviewed through conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Contacts
building owners/occupants, makes appointments to conduct on-site surveys and
compiles pertinent building information (utility shut-off location, type of
construction, contact information, etc);
Develops
and maintains a database of all commercial, public assembly, multiple dwellings
or other buildings of interest to provide vital information for firefighters;
Develops
and maintains a list of private dwellings that are constructed or renovated
using lightweight or similar products of concern for firefighting;
Develops
and maintains a list of residents with special needs (handicapped, respirators,
etc);
Determines
HAZMAT type, quantity and location, as well as Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
location;
Makes
recommendations to the Chief, District Manager and Board of Fire Commissioners
for new tools, equipment and apparatus;
Refers
items of interest or concern with a building, owner or occupant to the Fire
Marshal for review;
Works
with the Chief’s Office and the Fire District Manager to coordinate the sharing
of information between all parties;
Submits
written and oral reports to Board of Fire Commissioners as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good geographical knowledge of the agency’s area of
protection particularly with respect to its structures; working knowledge of
modern fire fighting and prevention techniques and of typical sources of fire
hazards; working knowledge of modern fire fighting equipment, its uses and
application to various types of fires; working knowledge of the modern
developments and current literature available and sources of information
pertaining to the fields of fire safety, detection and prevention; ability to
maintain records and prepare comprehensive reports; ability to establish and
maintain effective working relationships with the Fire Chief, Board of Fire Commissioners,
Fire District Manager and the general public; ability to express oneself
clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; physical condition
commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a standard senior high school
or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of
experience as a paid member of a fire department actively involved in
firefighting, fire prevention, fire inspection or fire safety; or,
b)
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school
equivalency diploma and four (4) years of experience as a volunteer member of a
fire department actively involved in firefighting, fire prevention, fire
inspection or fire safety.
NECESSARY
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment and
during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to
operate a motor vehicle in
