DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for developing, implementing and administering training curriculums oriented toward providing firefighters with the necessary information regarding modern firefighting principles, procedures and practices. The incumbent exercises a considerable amount of independent judgment and initiative in the development of the training curriculums. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for pre-establishing courses of action in the event of a fire related or medical emergency. Other fire prevention and suppression duties are included. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Fire District Manager. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

             Authorizes, develops, implements and administers training curriculums;

             Provides training as needed or requested for members of the department;

             Maintains and provides necessary reporting of training records, compliance and proficiencies of paid firefighters;

             Surveys commercial, public and private establishments with the intended goal of developing a pre-established response plan in the event of any fire or medical emergency;

             Responds to and mitigates calls for fire, rescue and medical emergencies;

             Drives and operates emergency response apparatus and equipment properly for fire control and rescue activity;

             Performs fire suppression and rescue related tasks;

             Performs miscellaneous work as assigned.

            

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of modern firefighting principles, procedures and practices; thorough knowledge of literature, equipment and other materials needed in the adequate instruction of fire prevention and suppression procedures; ability to develop and administer complex training curriculums; ability to maintain and report clear and concise records; ability to use sound judgment in the development of response plans; ability to use sound judgment in firefighting and fire prevention; ability to act quickly and calmy in emergencies; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and status as an active paid or volunteer firefighter, or as a retired paid firefighter, certification as a NYS Fire Instructor II, and appointment as a NYS Municipal Training Officer in accordance with the provisions of 19 NYCRR Part 438 New York State Fire Training Program – Minimum Standards.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

             At the time of appointment and throughout employment in this title, employees must possess certification as a NYS Fire Instructor II, and appointment as a NYS Municipal Training Officer in accordance with the provisions of 19 NYCRR Part 438 New York State Fire Training Program – Minimum Standards
