DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is
responsible for firefighting and other medical and emergency response including
salvage and rescue work. Responsibility
also includes pre-planning, community outreach, fire prevention and education,
as well as routine maintenance and custodial work. Work is performed under the supervision of an
incident commander and under the general
direction of the Fire District Manager or other administrative supervisor. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Responds
to fire alarms and combats, controls and extinguishes fires;
Lays
and connects hose lines, turns water on and directs stream on burning
buildings, vehicles, open areas, etc.;
Positions
and climbs ladders and enters burning buildings;
Drives
and operates emergency response apparatus and positions equipment properly for
fire control and rescue activity;
Rescues
and removes people from burning buildings and dangerous situations, and provides
first aid to the injured;
Responds
to emergencies such as fuel spills, downed electrical wires, gas leaks, water
rescues, motor vehicle collisions, etc. and takes appropriate action to protect
life and property;
Climbs
over obstacles and enters confined areas as required;
Performs
salvage operations and removes debris;
Tours
buildings/facilities and performs pre-planning: recording and updating vital
information such as types of construction, hazardous materials, sprinklers and
emergency contact information;
Participates
in community fire prevention/emergency preparedness education;
Locates
and mitigates potential hazards or fire code violations, performs hydrant
testing and mapping and reports issues to the appropriate agency;
Performs
a variety of tasks in connection with the maintenance, cleaning and repair of
buildings, grounds and equipment;
Performs
miscellaneous clerical work when assigned.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of modern firefighting principles,
practices and equipment; knowledge of first aid techniques; ability to develop
skill in the use and care of firefighting equipment; ability to use good
judgment in firefighting and fire prevention; ability to take, understand and
carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to act quickly and
calmly in emergencies; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from a standard senior high school or
possession of a high school equivalency diploma and status as an active paid or
volunteer firefighter, or as a retired paid firefighter.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
In
agencies employing five (5) or fewer paid firefighters, any additional
education, health and physical fitness qualifications shall be determined by
the appointing authority as per Section 58-a (6) of the New York State Civil
Service Law.
In
agencies employing six (6) or more paid firefighters, additional Minimum
Standards for Firefighting Personnel as per NYCRR Part 426, include completion
of a qualifying Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and completion of a
certified basic training program within 18 months of appointment. There will also be a qualifying medical exam
as per NFPA 1582.
At
the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must
possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
Throughout
employment in this title, employees may be required by the employing agency to
pass an annual physical evaluation including drug testing.
Employees
may be required by the employing agency to possess and maintain Certified First
Responder certification throughout employment in the title.
