DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class develops, organizes and
implements a comprehensive safety program for a governmental agency. The
incumbent is responsible for maintaining federal, state and local safety and
health standards. Work requires the
consideration of safety precautions for employees and the general public. Supervision is received from an administrative
supervisor through conferences and written reports. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises
the work of a support staff in enforcing safety regulations;
Conducts safety-awareness training programs for County
personnel;
Disseminates
educational materials to promote safe conditions;
Inspects
buildings, grounds, sewerage facilities, maintenance garages and other County
facilities; identifies hazards and takes action to rectify them;
Inspects
public works operation and/or maintenance activities to insure work is being
performed consistent with safety requirements;
Maintains
records on safety matters, and prepares periodic reports for governmental
agencies on safety program implementation.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of Public Employee Occupational Safety
and Health Act standards and regulations; good knowledge of equipment used for
maintenance and departmental operations; good knowledge of construction
standards and practices; ability to maintain accurate records and prepare clear
and concise reports; ability to communicate satisfactorily, both orally and in
writing; ability to develop a good working relationship with personnel and gain
their cooperation in the establishment and maintenance of a sound safety
program; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a standard senior high school or
possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience in a
position whose primary duties were concerned with employee safety, one (1) year
of which must have been in the development or implementation of safety or
accident prevention programs.
NOTE: Additional education may be substituted for experience up
to a maximum of three (3) years. No
substitution may be made for the required experience in the development or
implementation of safety or accident prevention programs.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
At the time of appointment and during employment in this title,
employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York
State.
