DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists in surgery, euthanasia, daily health checks, vaccinations of animals, and sterilization of instruments in a municipal animal shelter.  The incumbent is responsible for the supervision and training of support staff.  Work is performed under the general supervision of a licensed veterinarian, and is reviewed by a Veterinarian and Animal Shelter Supervisor.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists in surgery of animals and sterilization of instruments;

            Manages surgical suite and administers intravenous injections and anesthesia;

            Performs venipuncture and placement of intravenous catheters;

            Collects samples as needed for laboratory evaluation;

            Performs laboratory procedures for blood and parasite diagnostic tests;

            May perform animal euthanasia under the general supervision of a licensed veterinarian;

            Performs basic physical exams and vaccinations on incoming animals;

            Makes behavioral and medical evaluations of animals up for adoption;

            Dispenses medication to animals under the general supervision of a licensed veterinarian;

            Microchips dogs and cats as needed;

            Maintains proper inventory and places orders of vaccines and medications;

            Trains subordinate staff in specified procedures in the overall handling of animals;

            Maintains records related to veterinary procedures;

            Responds to specific questions made by the general public pursuant to specified procedures.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices; good knowledge of supervisory techniques; ability to prepare and maintain accurate and specialized records; ability to evaluate behavior of animals and respond as needed; ability to plan, direct and supervise the activities of a support staff in specified procedures; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Possession of a New York State Veterinary Technician license.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid New York State Veterinary Technician license.
