DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs veterinary medical services and is responsible for the administrative and medical oversight of an animal shelter within a municipality.  Supervision and training is exercised over an Animal Shelter Supervisor and other shelter staff.  Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrative supervisor, and is reviewed through conferences and reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Manages the medical care of the animals in the shelter;

          Performs triage function of caring for sick animals and establishes medical protocols;

          Performs minor and major surgery, and spaying and neutering of animals;

          Orders and prescribes medication;

          Performs euthanasia when necessary;

          Educates staff in basic animal and medical care;

          Works to build and maintain relationships with outside veterinarians and rescue groups;

Establishes and oversees protocols for shelter staff, which may include an Animal Shelter Supervisor, Veterinary Technicians, Kennel Attendants and Animal Control Officers;

          Enforces Trap-Neuter-Return program for feral cats;

          Does related work as required.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices of veterinary medicine; comprehensive knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices; comprehensive knowledge required to make diagnoses and prescribe medicine and treatment; good knowledge of supervisory techniques; ability to prepare and maintain accurate and specialized records; ability to plan, direct and supervise the activities of a support staff in specified procedures; ability to work with the general public and other governmental agencies; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          Possession of a license to practice Veterinary Medicine in the State of New York.
