DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under the general supervision of a
Correction Officer IV, an employee in this class supervises the activities of
lower-level officers on an assigned shift. During night shifts, evening shifts
and on weekends, the incumbent is completely responsible for the management of
the jail or honor farm. Correction Officers are designated by New York State
law as peace officers and may be required to carry firearms in the performance
of their duties. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Prepares duty rosters and assignment sheets for each
shift;
Supervises
the execution of orders issued by higher-ranking officers;
Classifies
prisoners according to the circumstances of their detention;
Directs
and guides lower-level officers toward accomplishment of assigned tasks;
Checks
kitchen operation and supervises issuing of food;
Checks
premises to assure high standards of cleanliness and maintenance;
Verifies
physical count of prisoners.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the policies,
rules and regulations of the Suffolk County correctional facilities; thorough
knowledge of the principles of penology as they pertain to the duties of
Correction Officers and the management of inmates; ability to enforce
regulations fairly and firmly; ability to supervise in a manner conducive to
full performance and high morale; ability to keep accurate records; ability to
act effectively in emergencies; ability to communicate clearly, both orally and
in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years of permanent competitive
status as a Correction Officer II.
