DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under the general supervision of the Warden, an employee in this class assumes responsibility for the efficient management of a correctional facility's operation. The incumbent supervises the work of lower-level officers to assure conformity with established policies and procedures, and conducts orientation and training courses for new employees. The work is reviewed by the Warden through conferences, reports and the efficient operation of the correctional facility. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Performs daily inspections of the correctional facility;

          Assists the Deputy Warden, and acts as Deputy Warden in his/her absence;

          Acts as a member of the Warden's advisory group;

          Acts as the Warden's personal liaison with prisoners;

          Checks all documents pertaining to commitments and discharges.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the policies, rules and regulations of the Suffolk County correctional facilities; thorough knowledge of the theories and practices of the administration of a correctional facility; thorough knowledge of the record keeping requirements of a penal institution; ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to enforce regulations fairly and firmly; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; resourcefulness in meeting all situations with quick analysis and action; good judgment; tact; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          PROMOTIONAL

          Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Correction Officer III.
