DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is responsible for the formation of policies governing the operation of the Suffolk County correctional facility, the minimum security facility, the Peconic Bay Medical Center and Pilgrim State Hospital; operations of these facilities are supervised to assure maintenance of proper security and conformity to established procedures. Work is performed under the general direction of the Under Sheriff, and is reviewed through frequent conferences and reports. General supervision is exercised over correctional facilities employees. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Administers
the daily operations of the County correctional facility, the minimum-security
facility, the Peconic Bay Medical Center and Pilgrim State Hospital;
Presides
at meetings of the Warden's advisory group;
Coordinates
the preparation of the annual budget for the County correctional facility, the
minimum-security facility, the Peconic Bay Medical Center and Pilgrim State
Hospital;
Coordinates
the preparation of periodic reports to the Courts and the Commissioner of
Correction;
Supervises
and coordinates the maintenance of all prisoner records;
Coordinates
the development of efficient rotating work schedules;
Inspects
the operations of the County correctional facility, the minimum-security
facility, the Peconic Bay Medical Center and Pilgrim State Hospital to assure
compliance with prescribed regulations;
Establishes
procedures regarding the handling of unusual situations and problems;
Supervises
and evaluates the work of corrections personnel at the County
correctional facility, the minimum-security facility, the Peconic Bay Medical
Center and Pilgrim State Hospital.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive knowledge of the rules and regulations of
correctional facilities; thorough knowledge of the principles of penology as
they pertain to the functions of Correction Officers and the management of
inmates; good knowledge of current trends in statutory and case law concerning
the rights of the imprisoned; good knowledge of the principles of psychology as
they relate to group interactions, inmate related hostage negotiations
and the dynamics and prevention of suicide; ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships with subordinates and inmates of the
correctional facilities; ability to plan, coordinate and supervise the work of
others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to
enforce rules and regulations fairly and firmly; ability to maintain accurate
records; ability to act calmly and effectively in emergencies; good judgment;
tact; courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
PROMOTIONAL
One (1)
year of permanent competitive status as a Deputy Warden; or,
Three
(3) years of permanent competitive status as a Correction Officer IV.
